Local Lab is Boulder, Colorado's premier 3-day new play festival of new works. We offer fully-staged concert readings, master class workshops, and the opportunity for playwrights and attendees to participate in conversations that help move new plays toward full productions. Local Lab plays have gone on to be fully-produced all across the country.

What do we accept?

Your play must be un-produced, a non-musical, and full-length.

When is the submission deadline?

Plays are accepted in the spring of each year. Deadlines for Local Lab 2018 will be posted on, or around, May 1, 2017.

Who may submit?

If you are a resident of Colorado, you can submit. If you are a literary agent or manager and received an invitation from us, you may also submit a play for your playwright.

Is there an entry fee?

Nope. This is a program for playwrights! And an opportunity for our community to participate in the play creation process.

How many per playwright scripts can I submit?

Just one per playwright. Pick your best.

Who do I send the script to?

Our literary manager Rachel Fowler at rachel@localtheatercompany.org. Please use subject line "Local Lab Play Submission."

Then what happens?

Three plays will be selected for a professionally staged reading (with the writer's participation) at Local Lab in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. These three plays will be considered for a full production, too. Past Local Lab plays have gone on to have full productions at Local Theater Company, critically-acclaimed shows Off-Broadway in New York City, and around the country at some of our most respected regional theaters.

Un-produced, non-musical full-length plays are accepted each summer for consideration in our annual new play festival, Local Lab.

The submission deadline for Local Lab 2017 play submissions has passed. To receive information about how to submit a play for our 2018 festival, please fill out the short form.

This invitation is exclusive to current residents of Colorado. Writers outside of Colorado must be invited by Local to submit.

I had a wonderful time in Boulder. It was valuable to hear recent rewrites of the play aloud for the first time, and it was especially helpful to work with Rachel on the play prior to the Lab and get her insights.

I loved seeing how involved and engaged the community was and how the company has built such a strong base of support and interest in challenging theater. Super inspiring!
